Stacking Sight Word Game

Sight words are something we practice on a daily basis and they can get old after awhile. I try to incorporate new games frequently so that they stay engaged. My latest sight word game, Stacking Sight Words has quickly become a classroom favorite.

Supplies Needed

  • foam sheets ( grab them here on Amazon or at your local craft supply store)
  • scissors
  • permanent marker
  • Stacking Sight Word printable (grab for FREE at the end of this post)

How to Make

  1. Cut the foam into approximately 1×1 inch squares. They don’t have to be perfect or exactly the same size.
  2. Use a permanent marker and write a sight word on each square.
  3. Store them in a labeled baggie or container.

How to Play

  • Put your students into groups. Each group needs 1 bag of sight word squares.
  • Have them spread out all of the squares face down.
  • They take turns turning over one square at a time. If they say the word correctly, they get to stack it. If they say it wrong, it goes back into the pile face down. Each time they get a word right, they stack it on top of the other.

  • Once a square is placed onto the stack, they cannot touch it again or straighten up the stack.
  • Eventually, their stack will start to wobble and eventually fall over.

  • Once the stack falls, they must choose one of the squares and write that word on the game sheet. Then they use that word in a sentence.
  • When everyone in their group has written a sentence, then they can start another round.
