Smell and Spell

I’m keeping this short and sweet tonight ladies. I am EXHAUSTED! The only reason I’m still up is because Duck Dynasty is on! That’s a Fact Jack!!!

I’m always looking for new ways to get my kids excited about their spelling words. A few weeks ago I got this great idea from Heidi over at In That Room:Adventures in Second Grade. She talked about this new fun spelling activity she tried with Mr. Sketech Scented Markers and I knew that I had to try this.

First, I took our 15 spelling words and wrote them on the tops of pieces of paper. I passed them out, along with a smelly marker, and our readers (used for a hard surface) and had them make a big circle around the room. They were so excited and started smelling before we could get a complete circle made. It looked more like a lop sided oval really but it worked!

I then played their favorite song (Call Me Maybe-Carley Rae Jepson) and they danced jumped around, waving their arms in the air really fast around their pieces of paper in a circle. When the music stopped they had to smell their marker, then write their word! When the music started back up again, they rotated to the next paper. I heard so many “this smells so good” and “ewwww this stinks!” It was great! Their colorful noses were fun to look at too!

We then graphed our favorite smelly marker but I forgot to take a picture of that! Orange and Cherry we’re their favorite smells and licorice was their least favorite.

This was quick, easy, and entertaining! They have already asked when they can do it again!

T-minus 2 days until spring break!

Marcy 🙂
