We are 100 days smarter in 2nd grade! Last Tuesday, we celebrated the 100th day of school! I'll admit that despite the craziness, the 100th day is one of my favorite days of the year. My 2nd graders have been pushed to the max this year with our new standards. We've been working on subtraction with regrouping with multistep problems and I know their little brains are so tired. I like to take this day to have some good 'ol fashion fun at school. They get to make a mess and enjoy just being kids for a day.
This year, I did things a little differently. I was inspired by Cara Carroll to do rotations this year. I always over plan and this way, I could fit more activities into each day. We had a total of 8 rotations. 4 in the morning, 4 in the afternoon. Each rotation lasted 20 minutes.
After I got everything together, I placed each activity in a tub, typed up some student friendly directions, copied them onto colored paper, laminated them, and they were good to go. Inside each tub, there was everything they needed for that activity. You can get the center rotation signs here!
Each student had a rotation card. After they finished an activity, they crossed it out.
During our morning rotations, they built a 100 cup structure. I said as long as you don't throw cups or knock them down on purpose, you can build whatever you want as a team. This is always a favorite.
They rolled a die 100 times. This is from my 100th day pack.
I used an app on my phone called Aging Booth to make photos of them when they're 100 years old! I They used random supplies I had, to make a picture frame for their photo. I cannot even being to describe what a hit this was! They were ALL about it until I tried to hang them in the hallway. When I tried, I was almost tackled by the whole class saying NO! haha! I sent them home and had so many parents tell me that they loved them! I can't show you the kids faces but here is mine. Oh, those wrinkles! lol
They finished up their morning rotations by making 100th day hats! Each child got 10 strips of paper, and put 10 stickers onto each strip. This took up some time and is where I spent most of my time helping students.

After lunch, they solved the 100th day mystery picture. I didn't take a snap shot of the final product but it made a 100 on their paper. They worked in partners to get this done.
This group of kids LOVE to draw. I let their creative side come out. They made illustrations using the number 100. My original plan was to have them write a story to go along with their photos but we just ran out of time.
In another rotation, I had 100 Hershey's kisses with the number 1 - 100 written on the bottom. They drew a kiss, and had to place it on the matching number on the hundreds chart. They raced to see which group could do it the fastest. Again, its just letting them have fun.
Last but not least, they came up with 100 parts of speech! They needed 25 nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs.
This was on their own. I learned we need to go back in hit adjectives and adverbs again, but overall they did great.
They didn't finish in 20 minutes, so at the end of the day, I made this giant flip book using bulletin board paper, and we completed the book together. When I called on them, if they could tell me a correct part of speech, I gave them one of the Hershey's kisses. It's amazing what they'll do for a piece of candy. :) I ended up hanging their flip books in the hallway.
Over all it was a great day! My favorite thing I heard was "This is the best day ever. We didn't have to work at all." haha! The kids had fun and that is what is important.
