Tye Dye Hearts: An Easy Valentine's Day Art Project

Hey hey ya'll! It's *almost* February and you know what that means! Its Weekend Warrior time. This month my WW gals and I are bringing you some ideas you can use for Valentine's Day.

If you are anything like me, you have a love hate relationship with this holiday. I think we can all relate that sugar highs are not a teachers favorite thing but it a fun time for the kids so that makes it all worth it.

I'm doing a little throwback post to one of my favorite Valentine activities. I originally posted this idea 2 years ago but wanted to reshare it. I learned this trick from my old partner teacher. We make these "easy peasy" Valentine crafts every year and they are so much fun.

Here's what you need:
1. large coffee filters
2. bingo markers (you can get them at hobby lobby. I've even bought some from Dollar Tree recently.)
3. paper plate/paper towel
4.hole punch
5.yarn
6.squirt bottle of water

First you take large coffee filters and cut them into a heart shape.

Then, using the bingo markers, have the kids dab as many dots as they want all over the filter. Do this over a paper plate or a paper towel because the markers will seep through.

Then, have them lightly spray water all of the filter. They will see the colors begin to stream together.

Let it dry.

Punch a hole at the top and tie with yarn. Hang and enjoy!

There you have it. Easy, peasy, lemon squeezy right?!?

  1. What a clever idea, Marcy! I love how it's such a quick and easy way to make your classroom space festive for the month of February. I've done coffee filter projects before, but used markers, not the daubers. Um, brilliant! I need to get some more of those daubers, ASAP!

  2. These turned out so pretty! I usually use food coloring for our spring coffee filter flowers. The dauber colors are much brighter. Thanks for the tip! I have never made heart shapes before, so I'm excited to try this out!

  3. I also love the dauber idea! And I'm sure the kids love squirting their project to make all the colors run! Will have to add this to my February to-do list :)
