Digging into Summer: Technology

It's been a few weeks since I've been able to link up with my girls for the Diggin' into Next Year linky. This week is all about classroom technology.

I love technology but unfortunately I don't have much in the current school that I teach at. My first year of teaching I got spoiled. I had a promethean board, my own laptop, iPads, a document camera and so much more. The second school I taught at I wasn't as fortunate. I had a mimio in my room, an iPad, and we could check out a set of iPads for our kids to use. Now in my current district, I have a mimio board and a document camera. I'm unable to use my iPad because we don't have wifi in our building. Our internet is wired to our computer so most of the apps I have on it do not work. Last year I struggled a little because I'm such a technology driven person. I am very thankful for what I do have though.

So let's start out with some things I did to incorporate technology into my classroom.

I am a HUGE Class DoJo fan. If you haven't heard of DoJo, let me tell you what it is. Class DoJo is an online classroom management strategy that is FREE! That's right folks. F-R-E-E! Once you create your account and add your students, each one is assigned an avatar. You can award students for good and bad behavior with a point system. Parents can sign up to and track their students behavior each day. Every Friday, it automatically sends parents their child's behavior report for the week. It is fabulous. I didn't even do a behavior log in their folder last year. The site did everything for me.
There is also a FREE app so if we went to lunch or library I could easily give or take away points from the app.You can read more about the site and how I used it in my classroom by clicking here. There is also a freebie

I also started using Remind 101 last year. This is an online website that allows you to text parents messages for FREE! You create an account and it gives you a code to give to parents so they can sign up to receive the alerts. You can send out reminders throughout the year without having to give out your phone information.

Here's an example message I sent out at the end of last year. Every parent that I had sign up received this message.

The site is so nice because it is quick and easy. I'm always forgetting to send home reminder notes. This allows me get in touch with parents when I forget something.

I am super excited to say that my class will be getting a set of iPod Nanos for our listening center this year! I submitted a Donors Choose project at the beginning of the summer. I never thought it would get funded but with the help of family, friends, and some great followers my project was funded. I will converting my entire book/CD collection into digital files so that is a huge project I have coming up soon. I can't wait to get them all set up.  As soon as I do, I'll be sure to share.

So how do you use technology in your classroom?

Weekend Warriors Part 2: Pinterest and Blogging Tips

Hey ya'll! I'm back with part two of the Weekend Warriors to share some blogging and pinterest secrets. You can see my TPT tips and tricks post here. It's full of great photos and video tutorials to help you improve your products.

While I was in Vegas at the TPT conference, I attend a session hosted by the FABULOUS Mel D from Seusstastic Classroom Inspirations called Advanced Pinterest. It was all about growing your business through the pinning website.

Mel put on a great session. I learned so much about pinterest that I had no idea about. Yes, I knew that pinterest is a great marketing source, but I didn't know how to fully utilize the opportunity. Today I'm going to share some of the new things I learned about the great site.

Blogging Tip: When you write a post, think of your readers and how you want it to sound. It needs to be clean and professional but also fun.

This is something that I am bad about...simply blogging about a new product and not really showing how it's used. Yes, its ok to blog about your products that you've created, but you don't want your blog to be a big giant "buy me" sign. Share photos of your products being used, rather than just slapping the cover on a post and calling it good. THEN, pin those photos of your product in use directly from your blog. This will not only drive traffic to your blog but it will drive traffic to your TPT store. Again, something I am guilty of.

Something that was stressed in more than one session I attended was to pin from your blog and not from TPT. At first I didn't really get it. When I'm looking for an idea, I always turn to pinterest. Then I got to thinking about it and went back and looked at my personal boards. Most of my pins and things I've looked at come directly from a blog post, NOT a TPT product image. When I'm scrolling through my pinterest feed, I'm more likely to click on a photo of a product in use, rather than just a cover photo.

Here is a quick video I made to show you how I organize my pinterest boards.

Create pin-worthy images! Again, use real photos of your products in use instead of just a  cover page. I've listed some great websites and apps you can use to make your photos stand out.  PicMonkey and Fotor are free websites you can use to make collages and add text to your photos.  A Beautiful Mess and PicsArt are  some apps you can download on your phone.

Here are the photo apps I use to create collages with to post on social media.

This next tip is something I had no idea you could do. Rename your images!!! This will help you so much when pinning a photo directly from your blog.

First you are going to need the pinterest button installed in your toolbar. You can click here to get that if you don't already. It is very easy to install. I recommend the pin but on your toolbar just incase a blogger does not have a pinterest hover button installed.

Here is a short tutorial on how you can rename you blog images so that you description will show up when something is pinned from your blog.

I hope these pinterest tips can help you grow your blog and TPT business into a huge success. If you have any questions feel free to comment below and I will do my best to help you.

Weekend Warriors Part 1: TPT Ticks and Tricks (Photos & Videos Galore)

Weekend Warriors is here folks! This month is all about TPT/blogging tips and tricks. The secrets that no one told you.

Today I'm going to be sharing some TPT tips that I learned from the conference in Vegas. Tomorrow I'll be sharing some blogging and pinterest tips with you too.

I've been blogging and selling on TPT for almost 2 years. It took about 6-8 months to find my groove and own style. When I first started out, I was basically teaching myself how to do things. I hope this post will help those who are just starting out, wanting to start the TPT business, or even veteran sellers just a little bit.

While in Vegas, I attended several workshops on how to improve the quality of your TPT products. A big thank you to all the presenters for sharing your knowledge with me.

So lets talk about making quality TPT products. I'm going to share some tips and tricks that I have learned over the past two years to hopefully help you out too.

TPT Product Tips & Tricks by Saddle Up For 2nd Grade

1. First up, is using COMMERCIAL FONTS & GRAPHICS. Commercial use is fonts and graphics that include the license to be in PAID PRODUCTS. A lot of items you find out there are for personal use only. These items can not be used in paid products. Please make sure you check the artists terms of use before putting them in your product.

Here are some great fonts that I use in my products. When you purchase a lifetime commercial license, this means that any new fonts that artist adds, you get those without paying any additional cost.

If you are like me, you probably have hundred of fonts installed on your computer. When you are creating products, it can get overwhelming and frustrating trying to find the perfect font of a certain word. While in Vegas, I was introduced to word This website is LIFESAVER!!! You can enter the text your wanting to change and it will show you what it looks like in EVERY FONT you have installed on your computer.

Here is what it looks like. Please note that is does not end in a .com. It is word - a great website for helping you choose the perfect font by Saddle Up For 2nd Grade - a great website for helping you choose the perfect font by Saddle Up For 2nd Grade

Isn't that AMAZING! I remember sitting next to Angie from Lucky Little Learners at this session in Vegas and we both looked at each other and went "WOAH!"

Now lets move on to some of my favorite graphic artists. These are just a select few of some of the people I use. They can ALL be found on TPT.

Now if you are like me, then you have literally hundreds to thousands images saved on your computer. It can get very overwhelming if it is not all organized. I've made a video to show you how I organize all of my graphic images.

*This is the first video tutorial I've ever made. It took me several tries. I was super nervous. Be nice people :)*

You can grab my desktop organizer by clicking here. I've included 4 different background options. Just right click on the slide you want to use. Click save as picture and save it to your computer.

2. Up next is including teacher and student directions in your products.

Sometimes, I like to put writing craftivities in my writing center so I'll include a copy of student directions for them as well.

When including craftivities in your products, always include an example of what it should look like. The one I have shown is just a simple one that can be colored. But if you are including a craft that needs to be copied onto different types of paper and put together, it is nice to see what the finished product look likes.

3. Printer and ink friendly copies are always important too.

4. Securing your documents is so important. I can't express to you just exactly how important it is.

Here is video tutorial on how to secure your PDF document on a Mac when using PowerPoint.

I hope this will help you secure your PDFS until you can get Adobe Pro.

5. Give buyers a GREAT first impression!!!

I'm going to admit that I'm a little embarrassed to show this next slide to ya'll. It shows the before and after of one of my BEST SELLERS.  The image on the right, the word DOUBLE is misspelled. I never even noticed it. Yet, it still became my best seller.  The cover was like this for almost a year before a sweet buyer messaged me to let me know. If you even find a mistake in a product, pleaser let the seller know instead of leaving back feed back. We will gladly fix it for you. See, I'm human. I make mistakes too.
